LiNK "Seoul Train" Screening

This year, we will be hosting another screening from LiNK as they tour across America. We will be showing a 50 minute documentary called "Seoul Train" which follows 3 groups of refugees who have escaped North Korea and are searching for freedom.

About the film:

"With its riveting footage of a secretive “underground railroad,” SEOUL TRAIN is the gripping documentary exposé into the life and death of North Koreans as they try to escape their homeland and China.

SEOUL TRAIN also delves into the complex geopolitics behind this growing and potentially explosive humanitarian crisis. By combining vérité footage, personal stories and interviews with experts and government officials, SEOUL TRAIN depicts the flouting of international laws by major countries, the inaction and bureaucracy of the United Nations, and the heroics of activists that put themselves in harm’s way to save the refugees.

In order to capture the essence and urgency of the current crisis, the stories of several refugee groups are told through actual footage. We follow these refugees from their arrival in China — before they begin their escape attempts — as they recount the horror they left behind. We also hear their fears of being caught and sent back to North Korea, where they know their doomed fate. We watch as they make their respective escape attempts and, in dramatic conclusion, we see the outcomes: some make it to freedom; others, including an 8-1/2 month pregnant Nam Chun-mi, get caught by the Chinese and are sent to their demise.

We will be having one screening on Monday, October 26th, at 7:00 PM in Axinn 229.
In addition to the screening we'll be serving Korean snacks and refreshments.

First Event of the '09-'10 Year!!!

Our first event this year will be our usual Noodle Nights clashed with a taste of Korean Thanksgiving!

Korean Thanksgiving falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, and this year, it falls on October 3rd. It is also known as "Chuseok", which originally means "great middle". Originally, it was a holiday where Koreans pay respects to their ancestors and give thanks for providing them with rice and fruits.

In modern Korean culture, although the ancestral rites are an important part, "Chuseok" has become a holiday where relatives gather, demonstrating the importance of family to Korean society. And when Korean families gather, it means there will be hearty eating!

So join us as we heartily eat in celebration of Korean Thanksgiving! Since this event will be an addition to Noodle Night, we will have our regular noodles, plus extra delectables, such as, dumplings, Korean pancakes and more!

Noodle Night/Korean Thanksgiving
When: Tuesday, October 6th
Where: Coffrin Lounge
